Paul Angel - Photography

Paul's current work includes commissions (interiors, event documentary, natural landscape and architectural details) as well as his own landscape work. His major on-going project is love | landscape, documenting found heart-shaped graffiti as well as the locations in which he finds it.

Paul details

Paul was born in Bournemouth in 1971 and grew up in Dorset. After completing an arts foundation course at Shelley Park, Bournemouth he studied painting and printmaking in Cardiff then photography at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design between 1992 and 1994.

His early paintings were mostly figurative while his photography during the early 1990s echoed the landscape style of the New Topographic movement, heavily influenced by American photographers such as Stephen Shore, Lewis Baltz and Joel Meyerowitz. Paul gave up photography in 1993, taking a stance on the use of animal by-products in the manufacture of photographic film and paper.

He began to work with found photographs, anonymous snapshots left in bins and skips or retrieved during house clearances. By re-mounting, titling and framing the pictures made by other people he made the pictures his own, with considerable success - he was the first student to pass the photography course at Bournemouth with Distinction having taken no photographs for more than half his time there.

With the advent of digital photography Paul was able to start taking his own pictures again, some 10 years after last seeing the world through a lens. His current landscape work continues to reflects the New Topographic style and ethos which stayed with him during his years without a camera, but there is also a clear and heavy influence of the found snapshot and the discarded 'mistakes' that he worked with during that time.

He currently lives within sight of the sea in Swanage with Vicki, their sons Sunny and Herbie and a dog called Rosie.
